Challenging Courses and Curriculum
PRISM P-16 faculty are collaborating with the Georgia Department of Education to revise the current state Quality Core Curriculum (now referred to as the Georgia Performance Standards - GPS).
In an effort to assure that Georgia 's students have the opportunity to take rigorous courses, PRISM educators will:
- Provide constructive feedback for the revised draft SM standards and curriculum.
- Participate in curriculum development teams.
- Provide needed professional development to ensure PRISM teachers are able to teach to the new standards as they are implemented.
A challenging curriculum as defined by PRISM:
- Reflects the National Science Education Standards (NRC) or Principles and Standards for School Mathematics (NCTM) in spirit and philosophy.
- Organizes concepts into a limited number of major units that are framed with essential questions, problem statements, or compelling issues that apply to all students.
- Supports a variety of instructional strategies that engage students in inquiry-based and problem-solving activities.
- Contains experiences that are designed to stimulate and develop higher order thinking skills.
- Continuously monitors student achievement using a variety of assessment strategies.
- Differentiates instruction for students based on information obtained from student assessments.
