PRISM Institute
A statewide PRISM Institute for Teaching and Learning of Science and Mathematics has been established. Regional participants will convene a community of scientists, mathematicians and educators within the broad higher education communities who desire to learn about, share, and improve their teaching. The ultimate goal of these participants in the Institute is to improve instruction in SM for all students at Armstrong Atlantic State University , Coastal Georgia Community College , Georgia Perimeter College , Georgia Southern University, Georgia State University , the University of Georgia , and their partner P-12 school systems.
Membership
Membership in the PRISM Institute will be open to any faculty member or graduate student at a partner higher education institution or in a local PRISM P-12 school district who has an interest in and demonstrated commitment to the teaching or learning of science, mathematics, science education, or mathematics education.
The PRISM Institute will allow participants several different levels of involvement:
- Large group gatherings will focus on dissemination of knowledge and discussion.
- Small group work will be project and possibly discipline based.
- PRISM Institute members will participate in large group meetings to engage with nationally renowned experts, discuss innovative ideas and share progress on exemplary individual or group projects.
- An annual conference will allow faculty involved in small group PRISM projects to share progress.
- The core PRISM institutions of higher education will develop local initiatives and participate in regional collaborations on selected central issues.
The goal of the PRISM Institutes are:
- To assess and share current practices in science and mathematics instruction
- To investigate, learn about, and implement various innovative teaching approaches in SM
- To promote research related to SM teaching practices and associated student learning
- To increase the success of all higher education students in SM and to increase the number of students who continue to take SM courses beyond the introductory level
- To devise, implement, and assess outreach activities in local P-12 schools
